Gambling has historically faced a lot of restrictions in the US. Despite the country having a long history with USA Flaggambling including being the birthplace of some of the world’s most popular casino games, gambling enthusiasts have often found it difficult to enjoy everything that casinos and sports betting have to offer thanks to federal restrictions.

Gambling in the US has been restricted to certain areas for many years with Nevada and a select few Indian reservations being the only place where Americans could enjoy gambling legally. In recent years, however, restrictions have been lifted and more states than ever are now starting to allow lots of forms of gambling including online casinos and sports betting.

States That Offer Legal Online Gambling

The very first online casino that opened in 1994 originally accepted players from the US but as these sites grew more popular, the US government quickly moved to ban them. The US Department of Justice argued in 2002 that both online casinos and sportsbooks were against the law and most online casinos stopped accepting players from the US. When the Unlawful Internet Enforcement Act was signed in 2006, it prevented US banks from processing any online gambling withdrawals.

In 2011, however, the Department of Justice changed its view towards online gambling and allowed states to individually choose whether or not to allow legal online gambling. Now, there are lots of different states which allow gambling in some form and the number is growing each year. New Jersey Online Gambling

New Jersey has joined the state of Nevada as the top place to be for US gamblers. Over the last few years, the garden state has legalized almost all forms of gambling including online casinos, sportsbooks, Poker sites, and much more. No other state comes close to the variety and accessibility of online gambling options.

The law in New Jersey means that anyone over the age of 21 can gamble online in New Jersey with the only requirement being that they’re currently in the state. That means both residents and visitors can sign up and play at any of the fantastic online casinos that are no available. There are also lots of retail sportsbooks and casinos in the state.

Pennsylvania Online Gambling

Since 2019, the state of Pennsylvania has legalized many forms of online gambling including online casinos, sportsbooks, and Poker sites. In a short space of time, several major online casinos have now started accepting players from the Keystone state and the only requirement is that they’re 21 and over and currently located in the state.

As with other online gambling sites, the casinos and sportsbooks in Pennsylvania will verify a person’s location using geolocation software before they can deposit or place a wager. Choose from a range of different online casinos including those that support mobile play.

West Virginia Online Gambling

The state of West Virginia legalized online sports betting in 2018, leading to lots of sports betting platforms establishing themselves in the state. Since then, West Virginia has also allowed online casinos starting from 2020 and by 2021 is also expected to allow Poker sites.

In a short space of time, West Virginia has become a great place for gamblers as loads of new online gambling sites open up their doors to players from WV. To sign up for any online sportsbook or online casino, players need to provide they’re at least 21 and will also have to show that they’re currently in the state. Although online casinos have only recently been legalized, some of the biggest casino brands are already licensed and starting to set up shop in the state.

Indiana Online Gambling

For now, Indiana residents are only able to enjoy online sports betting, The state legalized online sports betting back in late 2019 and since then, several major betting sites have established themselves in the state. Despite online sports betting being legalized, online casinos and Poker rooms are still against the law right now.

There don’t appear to be any plans to change the law at any point, so for now, those in Indiana who want to play at an online casino will have to go elsewhere. While you won’t be able to sign up and play at a site if you’re in Indiana, traveling outside the state gives you lots of different options for legal online casinos.

Iowa Online Gambling

Iowa is another example of a state that legalized sports betting back in 2019 but has so far not revealed any plans to legalize online casinos or Poker. The number of sportsbooks active online in the state of Iowa is still fairly low compared to some other US states but new sportsbooks are emerging regularly.

For now, if you want to play online Poker or other casino games, you’ll have to go out of state to play legally. There are also several legal casinos and Poker rooms you can visit, just none that are online for now.

New Hampshire Online Gambling

December 2019 saw new Hampshire finally legalize online sports betting, leading to lots of great online sportsbooks opening up in the state. Right now online casinos and Poker sites are still illegal, but players can visit any of the legal retail casinos to enjoy some of the best casino games.

Right now, Draft Kings is the main sports betting site available for New Hampshire residents to enjoy. Nevada Online Gambling

Nevada used to be the home of legal gambling in the US and Las Vegas still remains one of the most popular resorts in the world for casinos and gambling activities. However, when it comes to online gambling, the state is a little more restrictive than some of the other states on our list. While Nevada passed bills in 2010 and 2013 to legalize online sports betting and online Poker, online casinos still remain illegal in this state.

For now, those who wish to enjoy casino games such as slots, Blackjack, and Roulette will have to visit one of the many land-based casinos in the state. However, legal sports betting and poker are both available for anyone over the age of 21 to enjoy.

Delaware Online Gambling

Delaware has quickly become one of the best places in the United States to find online gambling of just about every kind you can imagine. There are online sports betting, online casinos, and online Poker all readily available for anyone over the age of 21.

Both online Poker and online casinos were legalised in Delaware back in 2013, and since then, plenty of great sites have opened up and started accepting players staying in the state. In 2018, Delaware also voted to officially legalize sports betting, meaning Delaware now has some of the best access to online gambling in the country. Delaware residents and those visiting the state have plenty of great sites to choose from and can gamble online with few restrictions.

Oregon Online Gambling

Oregon remains fairly restrictive over how residents and visitors to the state can gamble online. Although online sports betting was permitted from 2019 onwards, the state has said no to both online casinos and online Poker sites. For now, at least, those living in Oregon who wish to play casino games or Poker online will have to travel to another state to do so.

Online sports betting in Oregon is permitted but players have to make sure that the sites they place bets on are licensed to operate within the state. it should also be noted that while Oregon may have restriction on gambling online, there are still plenty of retail casinos, tribal casinos and Poker rooms which are legal and open for business.

Colorado Online Gambling

Colorado is home to several land-based casinos however online casinos and online Poker sites are so far not permitted to operate within the state. Colorado did vote to allow sports betting back in 2019. The first online sportsbooks in the state then launched in 2020, giving Colorado residents and those visiting the state a chance to place bets on most sports.

For now, online sportsbooks are the only place that you can enjoy online gambling while in Colorado. Several online sportsbooks have already opened up to players and there are more on the way. Almost all sports are covered, including American sports, horse racing and European sports.

Rhode Island Online Gambling

In Rhode Island, online gambling in the form of sports betting is allowed but other forms of online gambling are still against the law. The state does allow for online social casinos which let users play casino games for fun and loyalty points, but if you want to gamble for real money, you’ll have to visit one of the land-based casinos in the state.

Sports betting was made legal in Rhode Island back in 2019 and since then, residents and visitors to the Ocean State have been able to place bets on a wide variety of different sports and markets. For now, online casinos and online Poker remain inaccessible, but this may change in the future.

Montana Online Gambling

Montana is one of the latest US states to legalise some form of online gambling, with Governer Steve Bullock signing a bill to allow online sportsbooks to operate within the state. For now, online sportsbooks remain the only form of online gambling permitted in Montana, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t room for more growth in the future.

While sportsbooks are permitted online, users can only place bets on mobile devices in certain locations. All sports betting is currently controlled by the state of Montana itself, meaning residents and visitors to the state have limited options on where they can actually place bets.

Michigan Online Gambling

In December 2019. Michigan fully legalized all forms of online gambling, giving residents and visitors to the state chance to play at online casinos, place sports bets, and enjoy online Poker. It’s still early days for online gambling in Michigan, but new online gambling sites are expected to arrive by the end of 2020.

Several online gambling sites are already licensed by the state and are expected to fully launch before the end of the year, giving gamblers in the state a lot of variety to choose from. There are already retail sportsbooks, but this law also allows for full online gambling to be enjoyed. It’s an exciting time to be a gambling enthusiast in Michigan and the state will allow for residents and visitors to sign up and play.

Illinois Online Gambling

Illinois is another state that has legalized sports betting but so far, online poker and casinos are both still not permitted. If you want to enjoy betting on sports in Illinois, you’ll need to be at least 21 and either a resident of the state or simply visiting. There are both retail sportsbook locations plus several online sportsbooks that offer a variety of different sports to bet on.

Internet gambling in Illinois is still in its infancy, but those in the state can already enjoy some excellent online sportsbooks to bet at. For now, there are no plans to legalize any online casinos or Poker sites, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t gamble. There are still plenty of land-based casinos that offer lots of card games, slot machines, table games, and other games of chance.

Washington D.C. Online Gambling

Washington D.C. may not be a state but it still makes out list thanks to it recently changing the laws relating to sports betting. In early 2018, the city council passed a bill that would legalize sports betting, giving city residents and those visiting the capital a chance to place wagers on sports events around the country.

For now, sports betting in Washington d c is controlled by a single sportsbook which is run by the state lottery. However, Washington accepts applications for gaming licenses and will potentially allow more online sportsbooks to open up soon. As far as we know, there aren’t any plans to allow online casinos or online Poker, but as rules relax across the United States, this could change.
